Dr. Merera Gudina, the prominent leader of the largest Oromo Opposition political party in Ethiopia, the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), was detained by Ethiopian security forces on Wenesday at Bole International Airport on his return from Europe.
He traveled to Europe upon the invitation of the European Union along Professor Birhanu Nega, the chairman of Patriotic Ginbot 7, a rebel group based in Eritrea, to witness the current human rights situations in Ethiopia.
It is reported that Dr. Merera was detained accused of sharing the same forum at the European Union with Professor Birhanu Nega, who leads a rebel group labelled by the Ethiopian government as terrorist organization.
Since the declaration of the State of Emergency in October, the Ethiopian government jailed scores of political leaders, journalists, bloggers and activists.
The whereabouts of Dr. Merera is not known.
